Dhwani Theory
☆ INTRODUCTION
Dhwani Theory is an important theory of Indian Poetics. The word “Dhwani” means “suggestion” or “indirect meaning.” According to this theory, a literary work can have a meaning that is not directly expressed in words. The reader understands this deeper meaning through suggestion.
The theory of Dhwani was mainly developed by Anandavardhana, a famous Indian poetician. He explained this theory in his important work Dhvanyaloka. According to him, the real beauty of poetry lies in the suggested meaning.
✧ SHABDA AND ARTHA
Dhvani is closely related to Shabda (word) and Artha (meaning). In the Raghuvansh, Kalidasa compares Shabda and Artha with Shiva and Parvati, showing their unity.
«वागर्थाविव सम्पृक्तौ वागर्थप्रतिपत्तये ।
जगतः पितरौ वन्दे पार्वतीपरमेश्वरौ ॥»
Dhvani can also be understood through the idea of coding and decoding. Words act as the means through which meaning is communicated, while the reader decodes the deeper suggested meaning.
■ MEANING OF DHWANI
Dhwani means the meaning which is suggested beyond the direct meaning of words. Sometimes a poet does not say everything directly. Instead, the poet uses words in such a way that the reader understands an additional or deeper meaning.
For example, if a poet says, “The lamp is still burning in her room,” the direct meaning is simply that a lamp is burning. But depending on the situation, it may suggest that she is waiting for someone. This hidden suggestion is called Dhwani.
■ ANANDAVARDHANA AND DHVANI THEORY
Anandavardhana gave great importance to Dhwani in poetry. He believed that good poetry has three levels of meaning:
1. The direct meaning – what the words clearly say.
2. The implied meaning – what we understand from the situation.
3. The suggested meaning – the deeper feeling or idea that the poet wants the reader to experience.
According to Anandavardhana, the suggested meaning is often more important than the literal meaning because it gives depth and beauty to poetry.
TYPES OF DHWANI:
Dhwani is generally divided into three main types:
1. Vastu Dhwani
It suggests an idea, thought, or situation which is not directly stated.
2. Alankara Dhwani
It suggests a figure of speech or poetic beauty indirectly.
3. Rasa Dhwani
It suggests an emotion or Rasa. This is considered the most important type because it helps the reader experience the emotion of the poem.
■ IMPORTANT DHWANI THEORY :
Dhwani Theory is important because it explains why poetry can have meanings beyond the words written by the poet. It gives importance to the imagination and understanding of the reader.
A poem becomes beautiful not only because of its words but also because of the feelings and ideas suggested through those words. Dhwani helps us understand the hidden beauty and emotional depth of literature.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, Dhwani Theory is one of the important ideas of Indian literary criticism. Anandavardhana explained that the real beauty of poetry often lies in its suggested meaning. The poet may say something simple, but the reader can understand a deeper idea or emotion from it. Therefore, Dhwani makes poetry more meaningful, beautiful and enjoyable.

Vakrokti Theory
☆ INTRODUCTION
Vakrokti Theory is an important theory of Indian Poetics. It was explained by the famous Sanskrit literary critic Kuntaka in his work Vakroktijivitam.
The word Vakrokti means a special, unusual or indirect way of expression. According to Kuntaka, poetry becomes beautiful because of the poet's unique way of using language.
In simple words, Vakrokti means saying something in a different and beautiful way.
---
MEANING OF VAKROKTI
Vakrokti is made from two words:
- Vakra – different, indirect or unusual
- Ukti – speech or expression
Therefore, Vakrokti means a special and creative way of expressing an idea.
The main idea of this theory is that poetry is not beautiful only because of its subject or meaning. It is also beautiful because of how the poet expresses it.
---
■ KUNTAKA AND VAKROKTI THEORY
Kuntaka is the main thinker associated with Vakrokti Theory.
His important work is Vakroktijivitam.
According to Kuntaka, the poet uses language creatively and differently from ordinary speech. This special use of language gives poetry its beauty and charm.
---
■ TYPES / LEVELS OF VAKROKTI
Kuntaka explains six levels of Vakrokti.
1. Varna-vinyasa – Phonetic Level
This level is related to sounds and letters.
The poet uses or repeats particular sounds in a beautiful way. The musical quality created by these sounds adds beauty to poetry.
Simple meaning: Beauty created through the special arrangement or repetition of sounds.
---
2. Pada-purvardha – Lexical Level
This level is related to the use of words.
A poet may select a particular word instead of an ordinary word to make the expression more attractive and effective.
Simple meaning: Beauty created through the special use of words.
---
3. Pada-parardha – Grammatical Level
This level is connected with the grammatical form and use of words.
The poet can create beauty by using grammatical forms in a special and effective manner.
Simple meaning: Beauty created through a special grammatical expression.
---
4. Vakya-vakrata – Sentential Level
This level is related to the sentence.
The poet presents an idea in an unusual or beautiful sentence instead of expressing it in ordinary language.
For example, instead of simply saying “The moon is shining,” a poet may describe the moon in a creative and imaginative way.
Simple meaning: Beauty created through the special arrangement and expression of a sentence.
---
5. Prakarana – Contextual Level
This level is related to the context, situation or episode in a literary work.
The poet can make a familiar situation interesting by presenting it in a special way.
The material gives examples such as Antony's speech in Julius Caesar, Chakdol Prasang in Malela Jiv, and Viti Abhigyan in Abhijnan Shakuntalam.
Simple meaning: Beauty created through the poet's special presentation of a particular situation or episode.
---
6. Prabandha – Compositional Level
This is the level of the whole literary work.
Here, the beauty comes from the way the entire story, poem or literary composition is organized.
The material gives examples such as Ramayana, Mahabharata, Hitopadesha and Panchatantra.
Simple meaning: Beauty created through the overall structure and organization of the complete literary work.
---
• MAIN IDEA OF VAKROKTI THEORY
The main idea of Vakrokti Theory is that style of expression is very important in poetry.
A simple idea can become beautiful when the poet expresses it in a creative and unusual way.
Therefore:
Ordinary idea + Creative expression = Poetic beauty
---
■ IMPORTANCE OF VAKROKTI THEORY
Vakrokti Theory is important because:
- It gives importance to the style of expression.
- It highlights the creativity of the poet.
- It explains how ordinary language can become poetic language.
- It shows that poetry is not only about what is said, but also how it is said.
- It helps us understand the beauty and originality of literary language.
---
☆CONCLUSION
In conclusion, Vakrokti Theory explains the importance of unique and beautiful expression in poetry. Kuntaka believes that a poet's creativity and special use of language make poetry attractive.
Thus, Vakrokti teaches us that the beauty of poetry lies not only in its meaning but also in its special way of expression.
“Vakrokti is the art of saying an idea in a different, creative and beautiful way.”
